Schnabel's January/February's News!

Hi!
It is so hard to believe that the weather is in 50's right now and it's the end of January.  Blue sky and sun!  How lucky are we!
In January and February we are studying penguins.  We have 12 new vocabulary words.  The kids have been reading the words, playing games with the pictures, listening to penguin stories (fact and fiction,) watching penguins on You Tube, singing penguin songs, and having fun learning about penguins.
Moms, the new vocabulary words are:  fish, penguin, egg, loud, quiet, ice, earth, ocean, they, what, where, feathers.  You can start printing the words on file cards.  I'll send home the pics to glue on the back of the file cards ASAP.
CSE's are around the corner.  We will be scheduling more CSE conferences with parents.
My class has been #1 on the candy sale list thanks to you all!
We will be celebrating Valentine's Day on Tues. Feb. 14.  There is a "sweet heart" dance that day.  We will be make our Valentine folders at the end of this week.  The list of names for Valentine cards for students and staff: are:  Abby, Alex, Jackson, Ellie, Lizzy, Jessica, Paige, Ella, Debbie S., Debbie T.,  Rosa, Karen, Heather, and Erin.
FYI, February break starts the week of Feb. 19.

December 2011

We are getting ready for Christmas in Schnabel's room!  The classroom tree, although small, is decorated and festive!  The students have been busy making Christmas presents in art class.  We have been singing Christmas songs and listening to Christmas stories.
I made a new book for the students to read and already the parents have been working with their children on the new vocab. pictures/words. They are doing so well.  This is a list of the vocabulary words we are targeting in our WINTER book:
dark, night, moon, window, time, mittens, bed, morning, friends, my, eat, breakfast, pancakes, surprise, boots, walk, winter, snow, out, door
We continue to work on Skill Streaming with the speech teacher once a week.  We have been talking about "Accepting Consequences" and using a kind, not a "snooty" voice.
We have SPOT group with speech and OT once a week.   This month, the fiirst week: we made pancakes for snack,  2nd week: sensory motor (moved around the room.) The last 2 weeks we will make cinnamon ornaments and reindeer snacks.
We wish you all a Merry Christmas!

Hi parents!
It’s hard to believe we are in mid October.  WOW!   Lots of things to do.  Some students in the classroom are being alternately assessed by the state (NYSAA).  I’ve been working on that.  We have just about finished our theme of “Healthy Bodies.”  The next book we will be reading is, The Season of Fall.  The following new vocabulary words will come from that book:
season               wear
fall                      coat
weather              with
heavy                 tree
hayride               help
leaves                buy
pumpkin              jump
carve                 cold
pick                    rake
farm                   fun
You can start making your flash cards for your kids.  I will send you the pictures that go along with the words.  I hope to get around to doing that this week or beginning of next.
Open House is on Oct. 20.  I will have the slide show of our pumpkin farm up and running then!

Welcome Back!

It's nice to have all our friends back together again!  This school year we continue to talk about making good choices and we sing our "Better Choices" song daily!   We have music class with Nathan 1 time per week.  We continue to do "Skill Streaming" (ie. working on specific skills that the students continue to need.)  We just started working on "following directions" last week.  We will also have a sign language class once a week with Debbie Thomas.
Our theme of the next few weeks is, "Keeping our Bodies Healthy."  Ten of the new vocabulary words will reflect the theme.  The other vocab words are color words.  Everyone should have received the list of the 20 new words in the email I sent last week.
We will try to get Buddy, the therapy dog, back into our room once a week.  All of the kids really enjoy the time he spends in our room.
We are all looking forward to a great year!
